1. The reward of living in the Annapolis area is that we have so many extraordinary cultural opportunities available to us. At the National Gallery of Art, you have a chance to see the work of Barbara Kruger, a provocative contemporary feminist artist who has had enormous influence on the definition art from the late 1980s to the present. Her work often combines text and image, with black and white photographs overlaid with assertive and sometimes ambiguous statements. Her art leaves the viewer questioning some facet of power relations and sexual identity. Kruger’s work will be on display at the National Gallery of Art from September 30, 2016 to January 22, 2017. 2. The Annapolis Symphony begins its 2016–17 season with a concert, Lovers and Dreamers, featuring the music of Beethoven, Berlioz and Kodály. The concert takes place on September 30 and October 1, 2016. Guest violinist Midori will perform. For information on this concert and the full season, visit annapolissymphony.org.
3. The Fringe Festival in Annapolis describes itself as “over-the-top art and entertainment, committed to an open forum of expression.” That commitment alone should make you want to attend this evening festival of street performers on West Street. 4. Leading architects and designers in the home industry come out for the Annapolis Home Builder and Fine Design Awards. This year’s awards banquet will be held during the evening on Thursday, October 13 at The Westin Annapolis. An independent panel of judges who are leading professionals in the field selects the winners. The banquet is open to anyone interested in architecture, interior design or landscape design. 5. The Annapolis Dragon Boat Club, which supports breast cancer awareness, is hosting a fundraising celebration on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Annapolis Waterfront Hotel.
