Winning the Kentucky Derby is a once in a lifetime occasion. However, when this prize-winning horseman isn’t checking on his racehorses in northern Baltimore County, you’re more than likely to find him on his brand-new 78′ Fleming yacht aptly named On Leave.
Working closely with interior designer Christine Roney, owner of Yacht Interiors of Annapolis, and project manager Michael Schoelkopf of Edgewater, Maryland-based Burr Yacht Sales, the owner and his wife have created a floating home that could win a few trophies itself. The casual blue and white color palette the owners are partial to is a nod to the nautical without being trite. “Relaxing comfort is what we were going for,” says Roney, who worked with the owners on their previous 65′ Fleming. The couple live on their yacht when visiting Florida. “We were looking for more room as our family expands with grandchildren,” says the owner.
On the California deck, the Duralee fabric with Sunbrella contrasting welting gives a nautical roping feel without being overly dramatic. “The fabric is comfortable and easy to clean and maintain,” says Roney. “Providing fabrics that can take the sun beating down on the upholstery at all times of the day and year is important so they don’t fade quickly.”
In the main salon, Ralph Lauren’s nautical blue and white Surf Break Stripe covers seat cushions that rest on boards with high-density foam and webbing for both comfort and easy drainage. Under the cushions is plenty of accessible storage space. There is space for a flat screen in the main salon and for family photos displaying his beloved horses in action.
The 1″ Ocean Air wood blinds are topped with valances using a natural Sunbrella with blue welting to continue the nautical theme, as well as to hide the blinds when they’re not in use.
The owner designed the layout for the salon for his personal use. His own Scalamandre custom-designed chair in a geometric Duralee pattern plays off the blue and white stripes without competing. Accent pillows combine both solid blues with a seashore-themed print livened with lobsters, coral, shells, seahorses and crabs.
“The two patterns, on top of the classic blue and white stripe upholstery, complete the Chesapeake Bay nautical theme, which allows the owners to cruise north for the summer and south for the winters, feeling comfortable and at home no matter where they are,” says Roney.
What truly makes On Leave a home is the easy way that equestrian-themed accessories blend in with the nautical. The family’s passion shines forth: a sense of adventure on land and sea and a respect for greater forces.
