Around this time of year, some of us feel exhilarated, while others admit to being a little weary, overwhelmed, even downright crazy. After all, there are feasts to prepare, presents to buy, cider to mull, homes to decorate, and perhaps even pets to buy sweaters for. Where are the elves when you really need them?
With all of this going on, you may need an injection of Christmas magic. If so, head over to St. Michaels, Maryland, where enchantment awaits at the Christmas in St. Michaels celebration December 7-9. This quaint fishing town steeped in early American and maritime history is transformed by the glory of Christmas Past and Present. There is a Yuletide party, Santa’s Wonderland for the kids, parades, holiday shopping and a gingerbread competition.
The highlight of the weekend, though, is the Tour of Homes. During this event, you may explore seven homes that include the following:
Experience an old-fashioned Christmas in a Victorian waterfront home that dates to 1872. Residents who purchased it in the 19th century for $450 later expanded the home to 1590 square feet. In 2015, the current owners undertook an ambitious 16-month expansion and restoration. During the process, the original 510-square-foot structure was revealed and preserved. The residents were able to realize their vision to respect this significant home’s historical heritage and harmoniously incorporate 21st-century open space design.
You’ll see another historic home built a little later, around 1877. It is located near the town’s bustling center and sits on a wide avenue with period street lamps. Inside, you’ll find a staircase with intricate carvings that suggest the original owner’s prosperity, along with two chimneys and three open fireplaces.
A new waterfront home designed by architect Chris Britton will give you plenty of decorating ideas. The tree in the great room has a wildlife theme, and a small one in the back honors the owner’s pets both past and present, including six golden retrievers. Stay awhile to enjoy the large stone fireplace, coffered ceiling with inset nautical chart and display of antique Lionel trains.
The homes located in town are within walking distance of each other and there is transportation to outlying locations. Here, in one beautiful town, you can take a break from your checklist or, better yet, make it disappear. Get your shopping done and return with ideas and items to deck out your own home for the holidays
Tickets for the Christmas in St. Michaels Tour of Homes can be purchased online at christmasinstmichaels.org/product/tour-of-homes/ for $25 until noon on December 7th. After that, tickets can be purchased in person for $30 at the Granite Lodge on St. Mary’s Square.
