Garden1This Annapolis garden of David and Belinda Butler is one of fourteen gardens that will be open for the 17th annual Hammond-Harwood House Secret Garden Tour. The self-directed tour has become a much-anticipated rite of spring for serious horticultural aficionados, casual fans of gardening, and the plain old curious among us. This garden packs a big punch into a small space. The design gives the homeowners an outdoor world that stylishly serves as an extension of their house. A colonnaded covered porch provides a shaded space for dining. The outdoor living room is defined by a square fountain and the geometry of a flagstone patio, with a small lawn creating a naturalistic counterbalance. The lawn is softened with a curved stone wall, a raised planting bed, and a trio of river birches.

The tour is a major fundraiser for the historic Hammond-Harwood House, which is not just the pride of Annapolis but also a shining star of Georgian architecture in the United States.

Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 on the day of the tour.
